Training - K-9 Unit

K-9 Training Guide:

Introduction to K-9, review the SOP. Ask questions checking for comprehension of the SOP.

In-game training:

  • Check trainee’s uniforms

  • Inform them of the Kennel Locations in each Station.

(Briefing room at Sandy, Captains Office in Mission Row, Armory in Paleto)

  • Make mention of K-9 Care. (Take time to let him go to the bathroom, Play fetch with him during slow periods, go for a walk, ect.)

  • Go over equipment that is in the K-9 Vehicle.

  • Go over K-9 commands

  • Explain the use of the rear door popper should something happen to the handler or for faster release of the K9

  • Explain that if the K-9 is injured, the handler is supposed to stop and help the dog.

  • Make sure those running as the K-9 know how to select the proper dog and randomize skin textures to make the dog visible.

Foot Pursuits:

  • Have one trainee, or the trainer act as a suspect.

  • Have the handler give commands on how to go after the suspect.

  • Remind handlers that a supervisor is called upon for a dog bite.

  • Go over procedure when other officers are on scene.

Vehicle Pursuits:

  • Explain positioning during a vehicle pursuit

  • Go over vehicle to foot pursuit procedure (how to RP activating the popper i.e. /ooc pushes popper to release K9, Handler can also use save vehicle feature on F5 menu, then the vehicle door menu under vehicle options.)

  • Do a second pursuit. The first pursuit will have no shots fired, and the second pursuit will have a shots fired aspect.

Search and Rescues/Tracking:

  • Inform trainee of procedure of how to do a tracking process

  • Explain to trainee that a piece of clothing or something with the person’s scent for the K9 to pick up the scent of who you are looking for (i.e. /me lets K-9 sniff driver’s scarf found on the ground next to the driver's seat)

  • Explain how to have the K-9 indicate and how to track subject (i.e. /me dog sniffs ground, trying to find a scent and then the subject would respond with something like /ooc dog picks up scent just south of 3005 leading into the forest)

  • One scene looking for a lost hiker who fell on the mountainside. (Non-Hostile Search and Rescue.)

  • One scene looking for a suspect who managed to ditch cops, and tracking him using the K-9 from there.

Evidence Searches/ Narcotics Searches:

  • Explain to the trainee how narcotics searches are to be conducted

  • Explain that a counter-clockwise lap around the vehicle is the easiest and most efficient way to do a narc search

  • Give examples of how to conduct said search (/me runs dog around vehicle)

  • Explain how to have the dog RP finding narcotics using /me or /ooc (i.e. /me dog hits on drivers side front door)

Structure Searches:

  • Explain to the trainee how to conduct a structure search with only two officers and with up to 3 other officers (minimum of one additional with the handler in all structure clears).

  • Explain how if 3 patrol officers in addition to the K-9 handler should fan out and that officers should remain BEHIND the K-9 at ALL times.

  • Run a test run at a structure with multiple rooms (the Abandoned Motel in Sandy Shores or Pillbox Med Center is a good place to do this) while searching for a suspect who isn’t armed.

  • Run another test run with a suspect that is armed at the same location.

  • Make sure handlers are giving proper commands before officers go in for an arrest.
